W.L. “Buddie” Oulliber, 95, passed away September 9, 2017, in Woodland Park, CO.

Buddie was born at home on July 17, 1922, in Madisonville, LA, to Emile B.V. and Mary Canulette Oulliber.  At a very early age, he moved to Slidell, LA, where he lived (except for his time in the Navy)    until 1996, when he moved to Colorado.  Also at an early age, he was nicknamed by his older brother, Red (Bernard), who referred to him as “my little buddy.”

In 1958, he married Mary Wurtzer in Catonsville, MD.  They were married for 59 years and have three children and 5 grandchildren.

He joined the Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific during WWII.  At the time of his retirement from active duty, he had earned the rank of Lt. Commander and served on three ships.  He remained on reserve until 1982.

During his life, Buddie had a number of jobs.  As a teenager, he worked in the Canulette family shipyards building tugboats.  After the Navy, he ran the family hardware store, General Lumber.  Then he opened a real estate appraisal business, earning his MAI and SRA designations.

Buddie loved ships, woodworking, reading about the Civil and World Wars, and football (LSU, Saints, Broncos).  He loved to tell stories about his time on the tugs and ships.  In his Colorado years, he adopted the Western lifestyle, and was usually seen in boots and a cowboy hat.  He had a great smile and could easily get into a conversation with anyone.

Buddie is survived by his wife, Mary; sons Steve (Liz) and Paul (Suzie), daughter Mary Beth (Greg); and grandchildren Stephen (Heather), Daniel (Lesley), Mary Kate, Tyler, and Emily.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 14th at 11 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4435 Holiday Trail, Cascade, CO.
