Sylvia Prather Obituary

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Sylvia Prather, 61, passed away in her home in Woodland Park on Saturday, February 10th. She passed with her husband and two sons present, holding her hands as they prayed aloud The Three Beautiful Prayers. Sylvia was born in Ogallala, Nebraska on July 13th, 1962, to Julian and Beatrice Estrada and was the fourth of eight siblings. She graduated from Ogallala High School in 1980 and from Joseph’s College of Beauty- North Platte in 1982.

Sylvia married her husband, John, on May 28th, 1988, at St. Luke’s Catholic Parish in Ogallala, Nebraska and remained married for nearly 36 years. Sylvia, John, and their five children moved many times, living in Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Carolina, and finally moving to Colorado in May of 2012.

Sylvia will be remembered for her ornery sense of humor, her intense card-playing skills, competitive nature, love of cooking and baking, her love of family, and her Catholic faith. She had a deep devotion to Our Blessed Mother and prayed the rosary regularly. Sylvia’s priority in life was passing along the Catholic faith to her children; although she was reserved, she overcame her shyness to give witness to the faith and share it with those around her. She also made sure to foster a close relationship with each of her siblings, who brought extraordinary joy to her life. Sylvia had a heart for helping children with special needs, working for nearly a decade as a paraprofessional in Nebraska and Colorado schools.

Sylvia bravely battled Ovarian cancer the last 10 years of her life, repeatedly defying the odds and living long enough to see her children grow into adulthood and to meet her grandchildren. During her illness she trusted that Christ, who she always referred to as, “The Author of Life,” would determine the trajectory of her cancer journey rather than medical statistics. She remained rooted in her belief of redemptive suffering, the hope of heaven, and in the divine mercy of Jesus. She passed away surrounded by the love, care, and prayers of her family. She expressed the hope that her family and friends would not only celebrate the life she lived, but would also remember to pray for her soul after she passed.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, Julian and Beatrice, her brother Marty, and two grandchildren, Maira and Elsie Mae. She is survived by her six sisters, Emily, Diane, Teresa, Carmen, Catherine, and Elisa; her husband, John; her children Catherine (Shane Kenne), Jenna (Stanley Jones), Johnathon (Dana), Mick, and Sarah (Nic Cayton); and grandchildren Natalie, Juliette, Joanna, Collette, Lucia, and Laney.
