Norman Hammond Obituary

Norman de Mauriac (Maury) Hammond 1933 - 2024 passed from this life September 4, 2024 at his home in Woodland Park, Colorado. He was raised at his grandfather’s ranch in Cody, Wyoming. He started his education in Wapiti school house and then to California but he still wanted to be a cowboy! His mother decided to send him to an exclusive boy’s school, Middlesex, in Concord, Massachusetts hoping to make a gentleman out of him. However he introduced the cowboy culture to the school there and earned the admiration and respect of his fellow students. His next challenge was Colorado College where he earned a degree in Geology an another in Geologic Engineering while playing football all 5 years. Upon graduation he married his college sweetheart, Sally Howell, then spent 2 years in the US Army. They had 4 children and 8 grandchildren; Terry & Andrew Medico (Audrey), Debbie Hammond (Trey, Patrick & Brett), Susie Hammond, and Maury Jr. & Karen Hammond (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel & Kate). Sally passed away in 2001.

Maury traveled the world working in the oil industry, starting in Lybia and working in many foreign countries through the years. He went to Kuwait with a Red Adair team to put out the fires set by Sadam Hussain.

In 2004 he married Grace Black an old friend he and his family met in Nigeria in 1972. They have been married 19 years and have lived in Woodland Park all of that time. A place he always loved and where he said he wanted to spend the rest of his life.

His interest, of course being a geologist, was mining and he was an avid rock collector (a rock-aholic). He was a past president of the Lake George Gem Club. He and Grace traveled to Alaska (3,140 miles with a camper) 3 times 2009 – 2011 to take part in a gold mining adventure spending 3 months on the Uhler River. They also traveled to California “Happy Camp” for a week’s adventure in gold mining. Grace’s family became his own. 5 children and 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; Claire & Mike Bertsch (Sean, Jessie, Cara & Jared), Karen McLaughlin (Ryan), Barbara & Nelson Betancourt (Aislinn), John & Sharon Black (JC & Ashley) and Susan & Duncan Harding.

He is survived by his sister Lucy Guillet Bowden of Riverside, Connecticut and a brother Bennett Hammond from Brookline, Massachusetts.

All who knew him loved him, he was the real McCoy.
