On October 19, 2024, Nancy Born, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 63.
Nancy was born on September 23, 1961 in Aberdeen, SD to William (Bill) and Maxine Mannion. In 1984 she met the love of her life, Don Born, when they were counselors at summer camp and they married August 3, 1985. They raised one daughter, Katrina “Nina”, and a son, Caleb.
She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983 and moved to Montana where she taught in a one-room schoolhouse for two years. When she and Don married, they settled in Falcon, CO and she joined Colorado Springs School District Eleven where she remained for the rest of her career. Along the way she received her Master’s in the Art of Teaching. Then, at the age of 55, she went back to school to receive her Early Childhood Special Education endorsement from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs so she could teach Special Needs preschool.
Nancy was passionate about teaching children, especially the little ones. She was an Early Childhood Educator for 38 years. She believed a child’s parents were their first, and best teachers, and always thanked the parents for sharing their children with her. She strived to support the family as well as the child. Her favorite quote was written by A.A. Milne in Winnie the Pooh. Christopher Robin tells Pooh, “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” Nancy truly believed that for all her students and their families.
Nancy enjoyed reading, and spent many hours on the back porch of their cabin reading, and enjoying nature. She always said that back porch was her happy place. She only read nonfiction when she had to. Her favorites were what she called “bathtub books; murder mysteries and romance. She was an avid baker and many of her friends and family were recipients of her Cinnamon Swirl Bread and Orange Dark Chocolate Salted Caramels or Chocolate Chip Cookies.
She is survived by her husband, Don, her two children, Nina and Caleb, a niece Carrie (Jason) Boysen, nephews Ryan (Linda) Johnson, and Phillip (Rose) Johnson, 5 great nephews and 3 great nieces.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Bill, her mother, Maxine, and her brother, David.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Woodland Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Preschool.
