Joan Marie Simmons, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, at the age of 89. Born on June 10, 1935, in Miami, Florida, Joan was the cherished daughter of her loving parents and grandparents, who provided a foundation of warmth and support throughout her early years.

In 1955, Joan married John McDermott, with whom she shared 16 years of marriage and started a family. Following their separation, Joan embraced the role of a single parent with unwavering determination and grace, supporting her family through her work in bookkeeping. Her resilience and dedication were evident in every aspect of her life.

In 1978, Joan found a new chapter of joy and companionship when she married Walter Simmons, the love of her life. Their 40 years together were marked by happiness and adventure, including many cherished moments in North Carolina, where they created lasting memories. Joan and Walter’s bond was a testament to their deep love and commitment to one another until his passing.

Joan is survived by her dog Bebop, her beloved sister, Gigi, her four children—Kathy Rice, Debbie Patterson, Fred McDermott, and Ray McDermott—seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her life, and she took immense pride and joy in their achievements and milestones.

An avid lover of tennis, camping, and fishing, Joan embraced life with enthusiasm and a zest for the outdoors. She also cherished family dinners, where she found joy in gathering with loved ones and sharing in the simple pleasures of togetherness. Her love for learning extended to her passion for expanding her vocabulary, a testament to her curiosity and lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

Joan was a dedicated member of her church, contributing her time and spirit to the community she cherished. Her legacy will be remembered for her unwavering love, boundless energy, and the countless ways she touched the lives of those around her.

A Celebration Of Life will be held on August 31, 2024 at 1:00pm, at her church, Saint David of the Hills Episcopal Church located at 36 Edlowe Road, Woodland Park, CO 80863. There will be a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Springs Rescue Mission or Teller County Regional Animal Shelter in Divide, Colorado in Joan’s honor.

Joan Marie Simmons will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will forever remain in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
