Jeffrey “Alfalfa” Lynn Garverick, 57 years old, of Woodland Park, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on January 8, 2024 while at work for Teller County Public Works, plowing snow off the Teller County roads. He was surrounded by a host of caring co-workers, friends and emergency personnel and then joined by his wife, Tracy, soon thereafter.
Jeff was born on June 24, 1966 in Hugoton, Kansas. After Jeff graduated from Hugoton High in 1985, he decided to become a truck driver like his father and older brother. He got his CDL license and started his 28 year career as a cross-country driver. He loved being behind the wheel of all sorts of trucks, but his greatest passion was driving 18-wheelers. He started his driving career with a construction company in Kansas hauling road and construction materials. He hauled grain, cows and milk all over the central states. In 2005, he and his family made the move from Kansas to Colorado where he worked for Ute Pass Sand and Gravel before a landing a long-time position in 2010 at Western Distributing Transportation Corporation based out of Denver, Colorado. This kickstarted a 13 year adventure in transporting goods from coast to coast. He loved the road, although it was, at times, a sacrifice to be away from his family, he was happy to be able to make a good living for them.
In 1998, Jeff met Tracy Sturdivan in Kansas. Jeff and Tracy went on to have three children, Shay, Chase, and Lola Garverick. They remained faithfully together for 18 years before finally tying the knot on March 25th of 2017, with their children standing beside them as their best man and maids of honor.
In August of 2023, Jeff retired from long-haul driving to spend more time at home with his wife and children. Jeff was never one to sit for too long and after only 3 short weeks of retirement, he was ready to go back to work. He found a new passion and position working for Teller County Road Department service as a plow and truck driver. Jeff only worked there a short time before his death but he said he loved working the roads so much, "I feel like I found a new home doing good things for the people of Teller." He loved serving Teller County and was a willing volunteer to go plow the roads. He had a fast bond with his public works crew and he was never more happy with his career path. He was proud of his job and the services that he did for his community during the busiest time of the year for snow plow employees.
As much as Jeff loved working, he enjoyed nothing more than sitting at home, in his recliner with his favorite ‘Papa Bear’ slippers, covered in a wolf blanket, and a remote in his hand to watch endless movies in the living room with his family around him. He had a huge passion for cooking, especially using his smoker or fixing up a pot of his ‘award-winning’ chili. He loved his family more than anything and supported his children in all of their athletic accomplishments: specifically being a Marching Band-Irish Dance-Gamer Dad.
Jeffrey was predeceased by his brother, Jimmy “Spanky” Garverick; his father, Ronald N. Garverick; paternal grandparents, Clarence and Nellie Garverick; maternal grandparents, Charles and Bernadine Cantrell; and step-maternal grandfather, Leland Morford. He is survived by his wife, Tracy Garverick, and their children, Shay, Chase, and Lola Garverick of the home; his mother, Sheryn Cantrell Garverick, Hugoton, KS; his brother, Ron Garverick and wife Amber, Dumas, TX; his mother-in-law, Cleota Studivan, Woodland Park, CO; and so many other beloved friends and family from the community and across the country.
Funeral services for Jeffrey Lynn Garverick will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 785 Apache Trail, Woodland Park, Colorado, on Friday, January 19th at 10:00 AM. Internment will be at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, 997 Teller County Rd. 1, Cripple Creek, CO 80813. A separate Memorial Service will be held in Hugoton, Kansas TBD for family and friends there.
