He met and married his wife Sandra Beach in 1990.  Together they continued to operate Rocky Stop at the flea market and later opened a t-shirt shop in Cripple Creek.

Don and Sandy volunteered many hours at Cresson Elementary and later at Rocky Mountain Christian School.  He enjoyed helping young people with math and reading.  He later served two terms on the Cripple Creek-Victor School Board.  He had served as treasurer and in his second term vice president.  He also served on the school accountability committee and the early childhood policy council.

Don was very active in the community and served on many committees and the Victor planning commission.  He served 3 terms on Victor City Council and served as mayor until his health forced him to resign in June of 2019.
