Carl Schwing Obituary

Carl L. Schwing went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020.  He was 64 years old, and had recently moved to Divide, Colorado to be close to family and fulfill his dream to live in the mountains and travel west. Carl was born on February 26th, 1956 in St. Louis, MO.

He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Moss on June 17th, 1977 in St. Louis, and they were married for 43 wonderful years.

Carl attended Saint Louis University, where he graduated with degrees in both Accounting and Marketing in 1978.  He earned his Master’s in Public Policy Administration from the University of Missouri in 1982.

As a Credentialed City Manager for 38 years (retired), he was proud to have served many cities and communities including Manchester MO, Berkeley MO, St. John MO, Richmond Heights MO, St. Pete Beach FL, Cape Coral FL, and Bonita Springs FL.  A few of his other leadership roles included FL Sterling Council Examiner, founding President of the Mid St. Louis County Rotary Club, and Adjunct Professor at Barry University.

The career award that Carl was most proud to receive was the Florida City and County Management Association’s Michael J. Roberto Award for career development in 2018.

Carl’s motto was “Always do more than is expected” which he instilled in his family and those he mentored. Anyone close to Carl also heard him joke at some point, “Are we having fun yet?” when the situation was obviously less than ideal.

Carl will be remembered as a man of great faith who loved his family well.  He enjoyed ministering to others in his home church, and with his family, used his gifts to direct and perform in many church dramas. He was a proud father of two beautiful, talented daughters whose lives are a testament to his love, devotion, and nurturing.

His life verse that he shared with many was Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” He was a positive role model who worked through life’s challenges with integrity and determination.

Carl loved motorcycles (he told Brenda that he always reserved the right to buy another one!), travel, adventure, making his family laugh, and reminiscing about his role as Nathan Detroit in his high school musical, Guys and Dolls.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, daughter and son-in law: Courtney and Jeremy Noller, daughter and son-in law: Kristin and Steven DeFinis, his father Stanley Schwing and wife Alice, step-mother Lola Medlin, as well as his siblings: Todd Schwing, Linda Wilson and her husband Marvin, Mike Mikovich, Greg Mikovich, Steve Mikovich and his wife Tracy, and his nieces and nephews: Brittany, Mackenzie, Chase, Carly, Austin, and Hannah and beloved pets: Zuzu and Lilly Bell Schwing.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Schwing and father Carl Mikovich, sister Carla Weaver, and brother-in-law Michael Moss.
